AED at Minnesota Airport Helps Revive Woman

While waiting to go through security at the Duluth airport, a woman collapsed and bystanders, including a nurse, could not detect a pulse or signs of breathing. An AED was quickly retrieved and used on the woman.

A New Way to Help Save a Life

On October 18, 2010 the American Heart Association (AHA) released the newest guidelines for performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation more commonly referred to as CPR. They do this every five year based on new studies and clinical evidence supporting change. With every release of the guidelines the American Heart Association and the medical community make it easier to remember and perform this life saving task and this newest release is no exception.

WEST PARIS, Maine - Wayne Millen worried for years that he'd die of a sudden heart attack. Genetically, his odds weren't good. His father died of a heart attack at age 66. His mother underwent heart bypass surgery when she was 66. His younger brother, after surviving two heart attacks in two years, died at age 53 of sudden cardiac arrest.

New Guidelines for Preventing Sudden Death in Athletes Announced

The Youth Sports Safety Alliance, a coalition of 65 sports and health organizations that includes the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation, met Tuesday in Washington, D.C., at the third annual Youth Sports Safety Summit, to review a new position statement issued by the National Athletic Trainers' Association. The statement emphasizes the need for ready access to automated external defibrillators.

CARDIAC program benefits churches

Chances are people have seen the red cases hanging on the walls of schools, businesses or hospitals, but automated external defibrillator (AED) stations are now making an appearance in places of worship around Livingston County. As part of the CARDIAC program - Community AED Response Delivering Appropriate, Immediate Care - churches were given the chance to buy a basic defibrillator for a discounted price of $1,050.

A recent article in the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philly.com was a cause for concern for the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation. Authors Arthur Caplan, MD, and James Fitzpatrick, MD, of the University of Pennsylvania, cautioned readers about buying defibrillators, suggesting the concept of public access defibrillation may be overrated. We beg to differ.

June 14--Jeff Merrill was attending the Court of Honor ceremony for Boy Scout Troop 1 when something went wrong.

"I was on the far side of the room. I looked up and walked over, and when I got over there Jeff was turning purple," Joe Jacaruso, Scout master, said.
